“I shall pass this way but once; any good, therefore, that I can do or any...”
– From Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People… I always find most quotes to be corny, but I definitely do not follow this enough.

Donate to my polar plunge!
Next weekend I am taking the polar plunge… twice. The water temperature of lake Monona is hovering right around a comfortable 0.5 degrees Celsius!  Please consider donating! Donate towards my Mu Kappa Tau team. Donate towards my Delta Tau Delta team. All the proceeds go towards Special Olympics Wisconsin.

Chinatown in Milwaukee by summer 2010?!
On December 24th, Beijing’s Toward Group announced the largest overseas acquisition of commercial property by a Chinese firm to date… and it is in Milwaukee (My home town)!  Called Amesia Plaza, the property is expected to include over 200 Chinese retailers and restaurants!  For those of you from Milwaukee, they purchased the old abandoned North Ridge mall property. More Info: China...

iPhone MobileMe
I lost my iPhone last night.  The phone was left in taxi near Shek-O beach Hong Kong Island.  I’m a MobileMe subscriber, so I have access to all the neato “find my iPhone” features. In the case of a lost iPhone, MobileMe allows you to (assuming your phone is on and available to a cell phone network or wifi)… 1. Find your iPhone on a map. 2. Display a message or play a...

HKUST to Guangzhou (8 easy steps)
I went to Guangzhou this past weekend, China’s third largest city.  It’s a great cheap and spontaneous trip from HKUST.  To get there takes at least 3 to 4 hours, which involves a ton of different transportation systems.  To illustrate, I’ll lay out how ridiculous a single small trip gets… 1. Four sets of lifts and walk to the HKUST bus stop (15 minutes) 2. Choi Hung bus...

Chinese investment diversification
Currently the economy in China tends to favor large, local, diversified businesses.  Markets lean towards info asymmetry, which makes it difficult for private investors to diversify.  Therefore, the only real safe way for investors “spread out their eggs” is to invest in one large company that operates in many industries.  The thought is that a large company has a huge brand image to...

Foreign brands in China
In related topic to my last post, Coke recently tried to purchase Huiyuan (China’s largest juice drink company).  However, the deal was shot down by the Chinese government (even though the proposed price was likely inflated).  In this case the proposed acquisition probably fell under China’s new anti-trust laws. However, ever since opening up their borders, China has often placed...

可口可乐 - Coca-Cola branding in China
In my intro to Putonghua (Mandarin) class, I learned that Coca-Cola translates roughly into “tasty happiness”.  Pronounced kě koŭ kĕ lè. 可 (kě) = to permit 口 (koŭ) = mouth 乐 (lè) = happy Some Chinese characters do not mean anything individually.  Only when combined with other characters do they take on meaning.  In this case however, the individual characters give a general idea...

My lack of updates.
This past week I got sick with the flu (or at least flu-like symptoms), my computer won’t start, my camera broke, and I got a paper cut on my eye. (don’t ask how I got a paper cut on my eye… It is pretty stupid) Needless to say, I’ve had a shitty week. Nearly all of my free time has been spent sleeping. I have almost completely recovered and will begin exploring again...

Broken camera.
Went to Victoria Peak, Stanley Market, and had the most amazing meal I’ve had in Hong Kong yet (for only $20 USD).  Hang with locals or see openrice.com (requires a translator) for all awesome quality Hong Kong food needs. P.S. - I broke my camera two days ago.  I dropped it in the sand, and sand got inside the lens barrel.  Luckily it is under warranty, and it will be repaired within two...

Trip Tracking... →
I stumbled across a pretty cool service called Everlater on which I can record my travel info while abroad in Hong Kong. Here is my profile. Found it via the TechStars mentoring/seed funding firm.

National Marathon EP.
Recently we’ve had the itch to play again… to the point, we will be releasing a five-song, continuous-play EP very soon under the band “National Marathon”.  Everything is written and mostly recorded.  Mixing and mastering should begin in two weeks.  I’ll probably be releasing it while abroad in Hong Kong. For a bit of a teaser… check out our BandCamp page.

Preparing for Hong Kong
This is my first blog post. Around August 26th, 2009, I’ll be traveling to the other side of the world from Madison, WI. I’ll be studying in Hong Kong for a semester (4 months) at HKUST. I’ve read up a bunch on Hong Kong, spoke with some exchange students from HKUST, spoke with many people who haved lived there, watched the Anthony Bourdain Hong Kong episode, and...
